Surprisingly, this is not a Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy reference, but an actual fact. From Burnout: Solve Your Stress Cycle, by Emily and Amelia Nagoski

I think Doctor Emily Nagoski has a PHD but YEAH

[bold, centered text] Forty-Two Percent [bold ends]

So how much is “adequate”?

Science says: 42 percent.

That’s the percentage of time your body and brain need you to spend resting. It’s about ten hours out of every twenty-four. It doesn’t have to be every day; it can average out over a week or a month or more. But yeah. That much.

“That’s ridiculous! I don’t have that kind of time!” you might protest - and we remind you that we predicted you might feel that way, back at the start of the chapter.

We’re not saying you [italic] should [end italic] take 42 percent of your time to rest; we’re saying if you don’t take the 42 percent , the 42 percent will take you. It will grab you by the face, shove you to the ground, put its foot on your chest, and declare [image ends here, mid-sentence]

Here’s the last paragraph, completed courtesy of Goodreads:

We’re not saying you should take 42 percent of your time to rest; we’re saying if you don’t take the 42 percent, the 42 percent will take you. It will grab you by the face, shove you to the ground, put its foot on your chest, and declare itself the victor.

An ancient tree that contains a record of a reversal of Earth’s magnetic field has been discovered in New Zealand. The tree—an Agathis australis, better known as its Māori name kauri—was found in Ngawha, on New Zealand’s North Island, during excavation work for the expansion of a geothermal power plant, stuff.nz reports.

The tree, which had been buried in 26 feet of soil, measures eight feet in diameter and 65 feet in length. Carbon dating revealed it lived for 1,500 years, between 41,000 and 42,500 years ago.

“There’s nothing like this anywhere in the world,” Alan Hogg, from New Zealand’s University of Waikato, told the website. “This Ngāwhā kauri is unique.”

The lifespan of the kauri tree covers a point in Earth’s history when the magnetic field almost reversed. At this time, the magnetic north and south went on an excursion but did not quite complete a full reversal.

Earth’s magnetic field is thought to be generated by the iron in the planet’s core. As it moves around, it produces electric currents that extend far into space. The magnetic field acts as a barrier, protecting Earth from the solar wind. This is a stream of charged particles from the Sun that could strip away the ozone layer if it were to impact the atmosphere.

When the magnetic field reverses—or attempts to—it gets weaker, leading to more radiation from the Sun getting through. Previously, scientists have linked extinction events to magnetic field reversals.

The newly discovered kauri tree’s rings contain a complete record of a near-reversal—the first time a tree that lived during the entire event has ever been found. “It’s the time it takes for this movement to occur that is the critical thing…We will map these changes much more accurately using the tree rings,” Hogg told stuff.nz.

We can argue all day long about how Angel and/or Spike changed the vampire lore in BtVS. One had a soul forced on him, and the other chose to get one (after having a chip in his head for two years), but no one talks about my girl Harmony.

No soul, no chip, and she chooses to stop killing humans and drinking human blood for no other reason than a good pay check.

Harmony is such a fascinating case. She shows more empathy and genuine care for others AFTER being turned than she did before.

High school regular human Harmony was a garbage friend who turned on Cordy over nothing and took to humiliating her in front of everyone. And was a basic stereotypical high school mean girl bully.

Vampire Harmony seemed to genuinely miss and care for Cordy (even if she turned on her again, I think it was largely because she knew she wasn’t accepted into the group). She also seemed to genuinely care about Fred. We saw her mourning Fred alone when there was no one around to put on a show for. She was also genuinely empathetic to Wesley during that, she was upset about Gunn’s role in it, and she was angry at/hated Knox.

High school regular human Harmony that was alive with a soul would not have cared one bit about Fred’s death. She would have bullied the absolute shit out of Fred for being a nerd and then would have shrugged it off and forgotten about her if she was killed.

But soulless vampire Harmony gave Fred a chance, became friends with her, and was genuinely upset over her death.

Harmony is actually the most interesting vampire in the show.

This is the most conservative thing ever.

Reject all government oversight and safety regulations, call them oppressive and an attack on the free market, but as soon as something bad happens demand help from that same government.

This isn’t triple A, it’s the god damn government. The only one that didn’t do their job was the submarine company itself, the job of making a safe vessel and they couldn’t even give it a beacon. Now they’re running to the government to fix it and stomping their feet that it’s not already fixed.

As I saw somewhere else and to also quote some conservative relatives of mine: “I just don’t support my tax dollars going to fund their lifestyle choices”

Why do I keep seeing James Cameron all over my news (I know these are both Insider, but I have been seeing James Cameron in the news for days from several different outlets, I’m just lazy) Listen, I know he did the time and made the movie but how is he any different? Rich white guy? Profited off of the exploitation of the tragedy of the Titanic? Self entitled expert? Bleh I’m over seeing his crusty wannabe Saruman face all over my phone. Go back to the Avatar movies and think about what you’ve done.

Image descriptions- two news articles, one titled “James Cameron estimates he’s spent more time with the Titanic than the ship’s actual captain after 33 voyages to the wreckage” and “The Titan sub was likely trying to surface and the passengers probably knew the hull was starting to crack before it imploded, James Cameron says.”

A news article titled James Cameron on Titanic Submarine Loss: “Struck by the Similarity of the Titanic Disaster Itself” and a lovely hands rubbing meme with the text “James Cameron eyeballing the opportunity he never thought would come: Titanic 2”

…I’m writing this under the assumption that you don’t know any better, because hoo boy is this a bad take

James Cameron legitimately numbers among the small handful of people most qualified to talk about the Titan disaster. The reason why is because being a filmmaker is almost a side project compared to his very real contributions to submersible design, oceanography, and undersea exploration. Cameron has spent decades in the field of undersea science and submarine engineering. He co-designed a submersible called Deepsea Challenger which he personally took to the Challenger Deep, the lowest point of the Marianas Trench and the lowest point on Earth, alone; the first and to date only person to have ever done so solo. His hyperfixation is not the Titanic, it’s submersible engineering and undersea exploration in general.
Here’s him being presented the Nierenberg Prize (for contributions to oceanography) in 2013:

Note that in the above interview he literally says that he made Titanic essentially just to get the funding to go to the wreck site (and to have the funding to continue to do so decades onward). He’s made 33 dives to the wreck of the Titanic.

The reason why he appears in the news is not because he wants to talk about the disaster. It’s got little to nothing to do with him having made Titanic (though that is tangentially related). It’s because everyone knows that he is an actual, legitimate expert on the issue of submersible engineering (as well as both diving and diving to the Titanic wreck in particular), and so they bombarded him with interview requests and requests for comment. He specifically did not respond to any such requests until after the deaths of the passengers had been confirmed, because he knew that the sub had imploded and they were all dead, and he didn’t want to be insensitive and drown everyone’s hopes by telling everyone that the search and rescue was pointless. Here’s him on ABC News next to his friend and associate Dr. Bob Ballad, the man who discovered the wreck of the Titanic, who is probably the only other person more qualified than Cameron to talk about the recent disaster:

TL;DR: James Cameron is not being interviewed because “he made Titanic”; he’s being interviewed because he’s a well-known and verifiable submersible engineering and undersea expert.
